This Week in Solus -- Install #23

Welcome to the 23rd installation of This Week in Solus. March has been a busy month so far, kicking off with the release of Solus 1.1. If you’re been living under a rock since the start of March, the Solus 1.1 Release Announcement is a must-read. We proceeded to have our first public Hangout session, named by Ikey to be “Sundays with Solus”, talked about below.

Solus 1.1 Shannon Released

Overview We are proud to announce the release of Solus 1.1, the first point release in the Shannon series of releases. Solus 1.1 builds upon the groundwork of 1.0 with subtle refinements and improvements to Budgie, large core and graphics stack improvements, and furthers us on our journey to create something that you can just use, something that just works. Solus Solus is a Linux-based operating system built from scratch for the modern desktop and targeting the x86_64 architecture.

This Week in Solus -- Install #22

Welcome to the 22nd installation of This Week in Solus Marching to 1.1 We have a bunch to report on regarding our march towards 1.1, which is undoubtedly going to be the most exciting Linux distro point release anyone has every had. I think after the nice read, you’ll agree. Budgie Improvements This week the Solus Project released Budgie 10.2.4. Alongside updated translations, this Budgie release resolves:

This Week in Solus -- Install #21

Welcome to the 21st installation of This Week in Solus. Apologies for the lack of one last week, basically entire team was running unstable on our robotic bodies and we all got knocked out by a bad build and we only got the new bodies after TWIS’s normal time. I mean we were all ill or feeling “blergh” in general. Road to 1.1 Due to our benevolent code monkey, Ikey, being ill last week, we don’t have news to report on the 1.1. We should have some news to report next week.

This Week in Solus -- Install #20

Welcome to the 20th installation of This Week in Solus. Packaging and Package Manager Improvements Without question, Solus has the least complex native packaging and package manager systems of existing, modern Linux operating systems, and while we could sit back and enjoy that current status, we are committed to continuing to improve the experience of packaging and using the package manager. We will be bringing small, incremental modernizations to improve the experience of using the package manager and establishing an even more optimized developer experience than what exists today. We anticipate these changes to land between now and our 1.1 release.

This Week in Solus -- Install #19

Welcome to the 19th installation of This Week in Solus. Alongside our crunch and focus for 1.1, we’ve also been continuing our campaign of bug crushing . We’ve crushed 22 bugs over the last week, ranging from long sitting bugs that have been resolved since the Budgie rewrite to recent ones that are related to inclusion of git-based patches for new software in the repo.

This Week in Solus -- Install #18

Welcome to the 18th installation of This Week in Solus. Repository Improvements We’re currently moving the repository to a new server with significantly more disk space and resources, as well as to a location that should improve the main repository speeds. This has been the result of generous donations from our Patreon and PayPal supporters. Thanks to them, we’re able to worry less about disk space while everyone else can enjoy faster package downloads.

This Week in Solus -- Install #17

Welcome to the 17th installation of This Week in Solus. Further Separation from GNOME Stack We have benefitted extensively from leveraging the work of the GNOME Foundation, their contributors, and in the end the software they produce. However, the relationship with GNOME and downstream has continued to degrade and has made working with GNOME and its contributors difficult. This degrading relationship has had the unfortunate drawback of valuable contributions from downstream, for example from the Solus Project, being rebuked and thus making it harder to innovate separately while leveraging GNOME technologies.

This Week in Solus -- Install #16

Welcome to the 16th installation of This Week in Solus. This is the first installation since the great 1.0 release , which happened last week, as well as being the first of 2016! I opted to not have three blog posts in the span of two days last week, that’d be a tad excessive. Fast forward a week and things haven’t slowed down at all. We have gotten plenty of new package requests, bug reports, and issued fixes for hiccups users have had along the way.

1.0 and Beyond

On the heels of our first release of Solus , I want to take a moment to discuss with the community our plans for beyond 1.0 and up to 2.0. How our releases are structured Before we get started, I want to state how our release cycle is going to be and how long each release is supported:
