Evolve OS Pre-Alpha Released (Or shaking off the vapours)

Hello all, As a follow up from yesterday’s status update, well, it boots! So today I’m happy to release a pre-alpha validation ISO. Note this ISO is only available as a 64-bit system, and is not persistent! The desktop and installer are deliberately absent from this ISO, but you can use it to validate the system base, compiler, etc.

Reusing What Is Already There

As many of you know, with Evolve OS I’m setting out to create an experimental distribution. Hopefully, throughout the course of Evolve OS, I’ll be able to influence and help other projects accomplish common goals and improve current technologies. Recently I’ve been in quite a pickle in terms of choosing a base. Given that Evolve OS is not intended as a daily driver for other users, there are slightly different requirements. A common issue I’ve run into in the past is attempting to keep my own changes in sync with the upstream project, or chasing package versions. What I actually need with Evolve OS is

For openSUSE 13.1, and Fedora 20, please install via OBS I’m aware of an unofficial AUR package , but do not know if it works or is maintained. Feel free to comment if it does 🙂 Many features are either missing or not working massively well, but you can now logout, etc, from the desktop and use it. I don’t

Budgie Desktop "Fixup" Progress

Hello all, Just a quick status update on the fixes to Budgie Desktop. Currently I’m rewriting parts of the panel component, including the icon-based tasklist. Points of interest: GNOME Theme compatibility has been dropped. Too problematic to support a legacy theme and maintain consistency The panel is now transparent as seen in the screenshots, currently not themable The icon tasklist is around 40% complete, however you can’t currently use it to switch tasks, this will be implemented in future commits

Budgie Desktop Screenshots

Very short post, because I’m very busy working on the code for this 🙂 Note, this code is not yet on GitHub, but will find its way there in the next few days. As anyone looking can tell, I’ve drawn heavy inspiration from Chrome OS for the initial direction of the desktop.

Remember, we’re looking to experiment, to do things differently. A few points you should be clear on:
