Reusing What Is Already There
As many of you know, with Evolve OS I’m setting out to create an experimental distribution. Hopefully, throughout the course of Evolve OS, I’ll be able to influence and help other projects accomplish common goals and improve current technologies. Recently I’ve been in quite a pickle in terms of choosing a base. Given that Evolve OS is not intended as a daily driver for other users, there are slightly different requirements. A common issue I’ve run into in the past is attempting to keep my own changes in sync with the upstream project, or chasing package versions. What I actually need with Evolve OS is

Budgie Desktop Available For Testing
To further facilitate the development of Evolve OS, I reach out across the interwebz and ask you, the curious, to give Budgie Desktop a spin. For openSUSE 13.1, and Fedora 20, please install via OBS I’m aware of an unofficial AUR package , but do not know if it works or is maintained. Feel free to comment if it does 🙂 Many features are either missing or not working massively well, but you can now logout, etc, from the desktop and use it. I don’t

Budgie Desktop "Fixup" Progress
Hello all, Just a quick status update on the fixes to Budgie Desktop. Currently I’m rewriting parts of the panel component, including the icon-based tasklist. Points of interest: GNOME Theme compatibility has been dropped. Too problematic to support a legacy theme and maintain consistency The panel is now transparent as seen in the screenshots, currently not themable The icon tasklist is around 40% complete, however you can’t currently use it to switch tasks, this will be implemented in future commits

Budgie Desktop Screenshots
Very short post, because I’m very busy working on the code for this 🙂 Note, this code is not yet on GitHub, but will find its way there in the next few days. As anyone looking can tell, I’ve drawn heavy inspiration from Chrome OS for the initial direction of the desktop.

Weekend Experimentation
Hello all! As some of you may know from my recent G+ post, I recently had to perform some maintenance on the Evolve OS server after a bout of attacks. You’ll be pleased to know nothing was compromised, and we suffered no data loss.

Call for people!
Hello all, I hope you all had a fantastic Christmas and New Year! Here at EvolveOS, I’m looking for anyone and everyone to jump on board to bring about change. Whether you think something is generally missing in Linux distributions, is done incorrectly, or could just be done differently, you should jump on board! Remember, we’re looking to experiment, to do things differently. A few points you should be clear on:

Clarification
It has come to my attention that there is a lot of confusion surrounding EvolveOS right now. I noticed this today after reading a post on Reddit. It should be made perfectly clear, that both EvolveOS and the Budgie Desktop exist solely for experimentation, with the purpose of discovering/developing new techniques and ideas with the aim of upstream integration in larger projects, such as openSUSE, GNOME, etc. Call it an oven if you will, where new ideas can be baked to be shared with other projects. A side effect of EvolveOS’s existence will be a usable distro, as a demonstration of what can be done. It is not a fork nor is it attempting to diverge any course.

January alpha
Hello all, a quick update to any who may be following the blog. Given the time of year, with Christmas literally around the corner, the first alpha won’t be hitting until some time in January. To most this was probably a given, but its best to clarify the plans.
