Replace nautilus with another file manager!

Sat May 19, 2018 10:45 pm

With Gnome devs deeming desktop icons dead and the ability to launch applications in the file manager dead Budgie needs a new file manager.
It is clear the gnome devs dont care about desktops based on gnome that dont suck.
Luckily there are options as long as the dependencies are cut off:
Nemo
PcmanFM
Deepin File manager
Caja
Thunar

Note i am not including multi pane file mangers for this as budgies UI does suggest something more windows esque.

I am a big fan of nemo personally, sure it has its flaws and setbacks but at least its feature rich
Caja is good too
I also like thunar but it lacks file search

Of course there are other file managers to consider but those were the ones i think budgie should use in the future, I know that budgie will switch to QT in the future and that would be a good case for PCmanFM and maybe even dolphin.
The only reason why PCManFM is here is that its GTK version is still around

I'm a big fan of Nautilus and the entire Gnome apps, despite some stupid drawbacks.

I see no reason to switch when things can be patched back, and I think a unified app experience/design is more important. Gnome achieves that, no one else.

So, I'll oppose this.
Win10 64-bit
Solus 3 64-bit

Cool, glad to see some sanity for a change :D

Though the recent change to budgies readme does bother me:

https://github.com/solus-project/budgie ... us-project

I sure hope this doesnt go the unity route, budgie is a good desktop and i hate to see it locked to one distro.

I thought it was fairly clear, but separating budgie to its own github was an effort to unite downstream's into its own upstream. That was unsuccessful. Writing code that is locked and specific to systems results in worse code and not something that will be done.

There is only one true file manager: Midnight Commander! Seriously though, it is a very nice fm in the terminal.

I am trying out Sunflower, which is a double-panel fm that doesn't look horrible (like they usually do). I like that it has a built-in terminal emulator so you can start a terminal in the same window at the same pwd that you are currently browsing. Nice when fm's do things like that. I am a big fan of integration with the terminal. Too early to say if I think it is great or not but I already prefer it to nautilus, thunar, nemo.

Installed Solus Mate on an older refurb laptop.
Got amazed how good Caja was...more choices and damn fast ;)

Isn't that the one Xubuntu uses? If so, I agree, that's a great file manager.

Thunar is the file manager of xfce.... there is no xfce flavor of Solus.
