[SOLVED] NetworkManager keeps reconnecting (static wired IP)

Wed Feb 28, 2018 12:42 pm

Hello

For a few days I have had problems with my static wired network connection, which gets dropped and reconnected every few minutes. I have tried rebooting my Cisco EPC 3828D router and changing my connection to use DHCP but in vain. All other computers (windows 10, Arch laptop) and mobile devices using the same router do not have this problem.

Following `journalctp -f -u NetworkManager` gives this kind of output:

Code: Select all

Searching for this kind of NetworkManager problems or ARP things returned no help.

EDIT: Here is information about my network card:

Code: Select all

$ inxi -Nx
Network: Card: Realtek RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller
           driver: r8169 v: 2.3LK-NAPI port: d000 bus-ID: 03:00.0

Still having this same issue. Cannot do my work properly damnit :|

Can I somehow replace NetworkManager with other solution that just uses static IP without fuss?

I finally found a temporary way to go around this Network Manager issue.

I stopped Network Manager and enabled wired network like so:

Code: Select all

$ sudo systemctl stop NetworkManager
$ sudo dhclient enp3s0
But that is not a long term solution because also other people on my house needs to use this computer.

One thing I notices is this:

Code: Select all

NetworkManager[19250]: <warn> [1521535675.9187] arping[0x2149280,2]: arping could not be found; no ARPs will be sent
I couldn't find that `arping` command anywhere, although there is bash completion file for it in `/usr/share/bash-completion/completions/arping`. Could this be the problem?

Strange thing, Network Manager started automatically for some reason couple of hours ago.

And I found also this:

Code: Select all

<...> dhclient[4979]: DHCPREQUEST on enp3s0 to 192.168.2.1 port 67
<...> dhclient[4979]: DHCPACK from 192.168.2.1
<...> dhclient[29058]: execve (/sbin/dhclient-script, ...): No such file or directory
<...> dhclient[4979]: bound to 192.168.2.204 -- renewal in 1630 seconds.
But

Code: Select all

$ which dhclient-script
/usr/bin/dhclient-script

It sees that NetworkManager is NOT the whole problem.

Even after disabling it and starting dhclient manually, the network drops occasionally and I get these:

Code: Select all

2018-03-27T08:32:16+0300 wammeriic kernel: r8169 0000:03:00.0 enp3s0: link up
...
2018-03-27T08:32:39+0300 wammeriic kernel: r8169 0000:03:00.0 enp3s0: link down
....
2018-03-27T08:32:53+0300 wammeriic kernel: r8169 0000:03:00.0 enp3s0: link up

Sadly these Solus forums seem to be quiet

Or at least nobody seems to be able help me with my couple bending problems. Should I seek help in https://dev.solus-project.com/ or Reddit instead?

EDIT: I added my network card information into the first post.

The forums are an area for sharing & helping each other, but it is not the place to report bugs. So if you think it's a bug, you must log it on the dev tracker to insure the devs will have a look at it and there will be a follow up.
If you're unsure if it's a bug and the community can't help you on the forum (on or the other community social medias), you may always jump in a Solus IRC channel and ask for advise.

Well help is what I need.

I'm not sure though, it could also be a bug, but nobody has given any advice how to troubleshoot this further. I'm no beginner, but it is first time I have this kind of problems :|

Maybe I should finally finish WeeChat installation and learn to use it.

I don't like this situation where discussion is split across too many mediums though. It is not clear, for me at least, what is the best place to ask help :roll:

But thanks for the reply, I continue on with this somehow. I even have an idea about what might be the problem, namely an APC UPS through which my CAT6 cable runs. I checked the cables and modem alright when these problems started but it didn't occur me that the UPS in the middle could be the problem.

Damn it - reason for my problems was faulty hardware after all :(

I checked the network cables from both ends almost first thing when I started to get these problems, but what I DIDN'T remember was that the network cable goes through APC UPS behind my table. The UPS is quite old already, bought maybe ten years ago, and it is acting strangely for time to time. After putting female-female plug in the place of UPS, the network started working normally.

Cheers!
