[solved] gdm bumps back to gdm

Tue Jun 12, 2018 11:54 am

Previously was correctly nvidia installed (390) for Nvidia Cuda Geforce 540M. (acer aspire 3830TG).

It was wrong to install nvidia package for 32 bit (because of Installation of steam).

I then removed Installation of nvidia package for 32 bit.

Now gnome with gdm is affected and after reboot login in gdm bumps back to gdm as if correct password is ignored.

After strg-alt-F1 I have re-installed nvidia 390 package and gdm with gnome-shell.

This did not help.

I tried

> systemctl gdm restart

gdm still bumps back to gdm.

Any idea?

Sorry systemctl command was not used correctly here.
Instead it is this:

> sudo systemctl enable gdm

or

> sudo systemctl start gdm

But this did not work here either ...

After update of today Friday 15th June 2018, I then
made reinstall of xorg with:

> sudo eopkg install --reinstall xorg-server

and then

> sudo eopkg install --reinstall gnome-shell gdm

> sudo systemctl start gdm

But gdm still boots into gdm - it seems to be a bug in nvidia driver (according to a friend).

Does anybody know, how to proceed here ?

Should I de-install budgie.desktop and de-install mate.desktop ?

But Budgie and Mate made no trouble, until day, where I tried to install Nvidia-32-Bit-drivers for steam ...

FYI - It is not a good idea to install 2 desktops on the same environement, but that shouldn't be the problem.
You speak about MATE and Budgie but for some reason you use GDM which is specifically used with Gnome instead of LightDM / Slick Greeter.
I guess this is this ugly mix that cause the issues rather than the nvidia drivers (still you can try to uninstall the nvidia driver to see if it works with nouveau as troubleshooting).

I have un-installed nvidia-glx-driver , but there is no effect.
gdm still returns to gdm (even after update of today).

Because of gdm I cannot install lightdm, even when I remove gdm and gnome-shell.
After restarting lightdm with systemctl there is only login via Strg-Alt-F1 possible and no login screen.

What I can see is that in /run/user - gdm has the file permissions: drwx - - - - - -

It looks as if normal User has no permission to run gdm ???
But normal user should be able to login with password ?

And I see that in /run/gdm the directory of greeter is empty ???

I think somehow the file-permissions for gdm are set wrong (by update or by false nvidia-32-bit-package, which has been removed) ?

In /run/user - I had tried to set file permissions for gdm to 705 with sudo chmod 705.
But after reboot the file permissions of gdm were resetted to drwx - - - - - - back.

/run is a tmpfs meaning a ramdrive -> it doesn't survive reboots

This is hard to follow.

What I can tell is GDM doesn't load. The most likely cause is around the nvidia drivers.

I suggest following https://solus-project.com/articles/trou ... ot-failure

and ensuring the nvidia drivers are the correct version and for the correct kernel.

Then also run

Code: Select all

sudo usysconf run -f

Thanks to all, who have replied. This thread is solved by:

sudo eopkg rm nvidia-glx-driver

was not sufficient.

So Ikey gave the hint to try it with :

sudo eopkg rmf nvidia-glx-driver-common nvidia-glx-driver-current

This worked and login directs directly into desktop.

Ikey - big thank you - and you saved my installation. Now I do backup. In Strg-Alt-F1 there is no backup possible, because there
plug and play of usb does not work ?! Plug and Play usb-harddisk works only in desktop of gnome. Apparently in Strg-Alt-F1 I need to edit the
/etc/fstab file , before mounting /dev/sdb (/media/usb ???).

Return to “Installation”
