HP LaserJet 1018 printer won't print (bis) - fyi and fwiw

Fri Jul 13, 2018 10:45 pm

After doing a clean install (dual boot with Win10), still could not get usb connected HP LaserJet to print (another network HP printer had no problems).
Went back to initial "solved" thread
viewtopic.php?f=9&t=9435
and it turns out that sunnyflunk's first post in the thread resolved the issue this time around.

Okay, this post might not be that important...
But, if Solus is to conquer any (mostly Windows) newcomers, it must show some interest to prove the transition from Windows to Linux is possible.

Must i post this on Reddit to get some kind of attention?
Ahem....

Driver Plugin Information:

This printer REQUIRES a downloadable driver plug-in. Use hp-setup to install the printer, and to download and install the plug-in. In general, required driver plugins are required for printing support. Driver plug-ins are released under a proprietary (non-open) license and are not part of the HPLIP tarball release.

10 seconds to find this by typing "HP LaserJet 1018 Printer hplip" in a very well known search engine... ;)

In the other post that is marked as SOLVED, I see this:
Checking for network connection...
Downloading plug-in from:

error: Found No Section in /tmp/tmpmdot61m7. Please set the http proxy for root and try again.
error: file does not match its checksum. File may have been corrupted or altered

Thanks!

Apologies... it was a long day.

p.s. -as a true blood, non-geek, i do however find it a bit mind-boggling that this issue is non-existent on some distros like LinuxMint or Ubuntu flavors.
What makes it confusing is why an HP printer on network is easy as pie to install while the usb one connected to my laptop is always a hassle?

Things get "funnier" about that HP OfficeJet Pro printer wirelessly connected through network.
If it's on, then it shows up in "printers".
If it's off, it's "invisible".

Guess this would be subject matter for another thread maybe?

tbqf, I don't even have a printer here...
According to the error I quoted in my preious post, it seems that for some reason, the download of the proprietary driver failed.
Is your machine connected to the internet ?
Could you please start hplip again from a terminal when the printer is connected in USB to see the logs ?

About the 2nd question, this is to be checked by someone else, but it doesn't seem abnormal to me that when a wireless printer is off, it becomes invisible.

HP LaserJet 1018 is working just fine after doing:

sudo eopkg check | grep Broken | awk '{print $4}' | xargs sudo eopkg it --reinstall

hp-toolbox

Just thought that since the time patch was committed was considerable, i figured the printer should have installed just fine by now by using hplip alone.
Anyway, HP LJ 1018 is running no.1 now.

With regards to the other wirelessly connected to network:
On the Windows side, an icon shows if printer is installed and a notification pops up if it is turned off.
In fact, if my memory serves me well, LinuxMint has a permanent icon to show it is installed.
