Re: What drew you to Solus?

Replaced Win 7 pro at work with it and have not looked back! At home using it in dual boot with Devuan and frequently swap back and forth. Solus seems to be the least troubling distro when it comes to sound. I have an old m-audio music interface that plugs/ plays without any issues. The printer detection too is a plus! Overall a friendly desktop replacement OS with a bright future. Great work devs and thanks to you!!!! ;)

Lately I have been growing weary of canonical and it feels like they do weird stuff and take strange turns at every crossing. Wich for me has resulting in feeling like ubuntu and most of the "ubuntu flavours" (but mostly the ubuntu/Gnome combination) are getting bloated, and leaving kind of a bad taste in my mouth. Since I'm a person who like my OS sleek and kind of "streamlined" and fast/responsive I have always been trying to get as much as possible out of my computers, with overclocking and tweaking. At times I have been competing in overclocking with phasechangecooling and LN2 on the international arena. So when I look for a OS to run as my daliy driver I prefer distros where I feel the developers intentions and directions are heading in the same way as mine, making the distro fast, responsive and not to bloated with crapy software and bad/dirty fixes. But at the same time functional and easy to use.

As I pointed out before, lately canonical/ubuntu have been leaving a bad taste for me and since I planed to do a hardware upgrade last year I started to look around for another distro to switch to. After doing some "distrohoping", reading and youtubeing for a couple of months I decided that Solus Gnome was the one I'm going for. Tried out both Mate and Budgie, but decided that Gnome was the one to go with for my workstation/gaming rigg. I have also switched my other computers to Solus, Budgie on the HTPC and Mate on the laptop.

When I find stuff that I like and fitts my needs I tend to stick with I plan to stick with Solus for the foreseeable future ! :-)

Fedora taking too long to boot. I then installed OpenSuse, but it was too bloated for me.

I was reading Reddit a lot and that how was drawn to Solus. I wanted to try Budgie DE after XFCE and KDE and installing Solus, was a logical choice.

I was quite satisfied with Xubuntu, my first Linux installation of any Linux after long years but I talked with a friend of mine who was distro-hopping a lot so I also wanted to try something different what would fit my needs. My point here was primarily learn how Linux works in general (I have been reading How Linux works :-) so I decided to try Arch and although it was a good experience learning how to install the system from the shell and connect to wifi with wpa_supplicant, I wasn't happy with it. It was unstable and I wasn't willing to spend many hours more fixing things... At the end I wanted to spend more time on programming in Python, my another hobby, but I was kinda surprised that I found for ex. Cantata in the official repository but not PyCharm CE.

Overall, I am very pleased with this OS so far. I had to find a workaround for turning the mouse acceleration off and speeding up my trackpoint, but it wasn't a big deal. The design of Budgie is exactly what I needed, esthetic, modern but practical and simple. I hope that the authors will stick with their ideas because I fell in love with this OS.

Hope Solus doesn't get too good!
Otherwise, they might sell out like SUSE.

Think i discovered Solus Budgie via Distrowatch.
Not a huge surprise there is there?!

Rolling release, Clear linux optimisations (only intel hw machine but I like to play some games), extremely usable distro for home purposes.
I was a distro hopper but now I think I'm going t stay here for longer. I miss windows overwiew and hot corners in Budgie, so right now I'm on Gnome.
Solus of course!

Tested several distros over the last months and read up a lot over 2 days.
Eventually i decided to not dual boot with Windows on my notebook and just run Solus. Tried Elementary, LM, Ubuntu, Ubuntu Budgie, Zorin and 2-3 more.

Main reason I decided to go all in was to learn it and actively use it instead of boting into Windows out of habit.

So far it's been great and does what I need it to. It looks great and runs very fast on my ASUS UX360CA.

I play loads of games on my desktop so I'll keep Windows there, but now I have at least moved my notebook and HTPC over to Linux.

I came from using Manjaro Gnome, and prior to that I was using Manjaro Deepin. My desktop is 6 years old, but both of those distributions seemed to be causing issues with my system with their recent updates so I moved to Solus looking for more stability. I've been following Solus loosely, and honestly, the only thing that held me back was the amount of applications in the software center. Coming from Manjaro, I was spoiled with the AUR application selections. I'm sure the software selection will grow as this distribution evolves. I've also found some great postings already on how to install non-standard software (Timeshift, as an example) and with the advent of snap packages, I'm not worried too much about not being able to install any of my beloved software.

What I have noticed immediately is the speed of web browsing and launching my programs compared to Manjaro. Installation and upgrades only had a minor 'hitch' in that I received a 'database recovery needed' error. The forums had the answer for me and with a simple command, the database was repaired. The overall look of Solus is almost identical to how I had configured my Gnome desktop anyway so it is an easy transition. I've been hearing and reading a lot of good things about Solus and so far, I'm happy to have made the transition.

Solus attracted my attention because it has been developed from scratch by Ikey. I've read some Solus reviews on the net, and was really intrigued. It promised clean, attractive, beautiful and simple interface. Stable and bug free platform.

That is exactly what I need for my simple everyday uses. I use Web Browser, Terminal, VLC, Skype and VNC. Occasionally, printing on paper.

I have been using it since Aug 24, and so far I am just loving it. I understand that occasional bugs and glitches will be ironed out with ongoing updates and fixes over time. Firefox crashes and freezes really bug me, especially the 'GAH' word! As if they enjoy us crashing..... So, trying Chrome for now, perhaps proves more stable.

Giving it time to play out. Thank you Ikey for your devoted work! Elf Prince
